The Health and Healing Episode: Medshare, Shoe4Africa and You Can Thrive

There's a new episode with excellent interviews that needs attention, stat!  This time we'll hear from three organizations in the field of medicine including Medshare which redirects medical surplus from landfills to developing healthcare systems, Shoe4Africa which built a children's hospital in Africa and You Can Thrive which holistically supports women as they deal with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. 

Snapping on their rubber gloves and buckling their head mirrors alongside of me are two caring and thoughtful medical professionals.  I'm joined by nurse Melissa (who gives us the latest on her organization Purses for Nurses) and the newly-minted Dr. Brandon Alexander!

The Writing Episode: 826NYC, Library of America and Walking in Other People's Shoes

This episode, my friend Preya Singh and I look at the art of writing through the lens of three very different interviews.  We start with the benefits of creative chaos orchestrated by 826NYC and the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.  We then hear how the Library of America is preserving and sharing the American experience.  And we finish with Walking in Other People's Shoes which is building a community of women sharing inspiring stories of struggle, perseverance and triumph.

I want to thank all my guests for being generous with their time including Ellie Windham, Joshua Mandelbaum and Max Rudin.  I was also excited to work with Yaniza and incorporate her music throughout the episode.  The Centre for Social Innovation continues to be a very valuable resource.  And I'm happy I was able to reconnect with my thoughtful friend, my cohost, Preya!

The Environment Episode

This episode I hear from some environmental Davids who are enthusiastically staring down the Goliaths of climate change, waste and many other pressing environmental issues.  We'll hear stories from Kaia Rose, the director of Climate Countdown which is making climate politics much more accessible, Robert Lee of Rescuing Leftover Cuisine who has found a way to make enormous environmental gains while helping support New York’s food insecure and Justin Bulova & Emily Stewart of Grades of Green which is showing students and children everywhere that they can also be environmental leaders.  Helping provide context for this episode are CSI social entrepreneurs Bill Levey of Naeco and Amer Jindali of Future Meets Present.

Happy Giving Tuesday!  Since starting Nonprofit Tangent, I've ended almost every interview with a simple question: What have you learned?  This episode we get to hear those answers.  So Instead of stories, I present the collected wisdom from (most of) the volunteers, founders, executive directors, and others I have spoken with over the past year and a half.

The Foodie Episode: One Sandwich at a Time, La Nacional and The Impact Network

This episode I present a tasty three course meal of a podcast with organizations that span the spectrum  of food's role in our lives from basic sustenance to cultural ambassador to bringing community together.  We start with One Sandwhich at a Time's Erin Dinan who explains how half a sandwich spawned an army of sandwich makers  across New York that feed the homeless.  Then Robert Sanfiz of La Nacional relays the enduring power of the 150 year old Spanish Benevolent Society supporting Spanish speaking immigrants and its beautiful, newly restored restaurant.  Finally we end hearing from Katie Kerr of the Impact Network.  She is putting together an all-star team of NYC chefs for Chefs for Impact, a yearly event which raises money for their mission of bringing an excellent, technology-driven education to rural Zambia.  And I have good friend JP King along to help me tie it all of into a neat bow!
